South Broadway across Englewood is one of those older parts of town that’s slowly evolving and modernizing. And, as we’ve noted before, one of the first signs of rebirth is usually restaurants. About a year ago, Breakfast on Broadway opened in the 2900 block of South Broadway, serving a quality breakfast and l unch in a bright and cheery environment. Now, seven blocks north, just south of Evans, the same people have launched the South Broadway Grill in the old Mr. Steak building.Anybody can be at the right place and time and luck into a successful restaurant, but to do it a second time indicates that a lot more than luck is involved. Of course, it’s way too early to proclaim the South Broadway Grill a success, but if I were a betting man, I’d be putting my money here. It’s been awhile since Mr. Steak cranked food out of the kitchen here, and my memory is a bit dim on the details of that restaurant, but I can guarantee it never looked as good as it looks today, with an attractive bar as the eye-catching centerpiece, soft lighting, cozy booth and table seating and warm earth tones on the walls. It’s designed to appeal to the average person looking for a great meal in a room that’s upscale without being intimidating.
What really sets the South Broadway Grill apart from your average mid-range restaurant, however, is the food. This is comfort fare with an upscale twist, priced within just about anyone’s reach. You can drop by for lunch or dinner and enjoy a bowl of buffalo chili, a club sandwich, a half pound burger or a Monte Cristo all for less than $8. Everything else is pric ed from $13 to $19, except the 16-ounce cowboy steak, which comes in at $24.95.One of my criteria for judging a menu is how hard a time we have choosing an entrée and, at South Broadway Grill, we really had a hard time. Even with the appetizers, narrowing your choice is not easy. There are Fried Pickles, Swedish Meatball Sliders, Toasted Buffalo Ravioli, and our ultimate choice the Crawfish Queso. Talk about delicious and rich, the queso is made with a mix of cream cheese and smoked cheddar combined with house-made crawfish sausage, and served with tortilla chips. We weren’t able to finish it all before our entrees arrived, but it was so good we ended up eating the last few dollops as dessert.
Entrée selection is no easier. There’s chicken and waffles, stroganoff made with buffalo short ribs, cannelloni stuffed with duck, and turkey meat loaf. Even a straightforward dish like broiled salmon is enhanced with a lemon-infused oil, and a generous portion of seared Ahi tuna comes with a balsamic syrup and wasabi mayonnaise. In short, there’s something here for everyone, from a simple sautéed liver with onions and bacon to penne pasta combined with Cajun smoked sausage and shrimp. With its tempting menu and reasonable prices, this is a restaurant that has the power to attract diners several times a week, even in slow economic times. And that is why I’m betting the South Broadway Grill is going to be around for many years. |
